A simple classroom Halloween activity

Give readers a puzzle that matches their confidence. The easy version uses only forward words across and down; the medium version adds diagonals. The hard version includes backwards paths and more atmospheric vocabulary.

Print the first page for each solver and keep the answer pages separate. For a group activity, have pairs take turns choosing a word from the list. When they finish, invite them to describe a costume or make up a short story using three of the words.

These are word puzzles for readers, so younger children may need an adult to help with the list. For a gentler theme, choose Pumpkin patch rather than The haunted house.

Prepare the party sheets

  1. Pick a Halloween edition and match its Letter or A4 file to your paper.
  2. Make activity copies from page one; set the shaded answer page aside.
  3. Check portrait orientation and a 100% preview before making a class set.

Plain black letters keep the party sheets simple to print in grayscale. For the large print edition, avoid putting two pages on one sheet: that would shrink its 19-point grid letters.

Offer a small Halloween hint

Every Halloween answer sheet repeats its own grid with the hidden words shaded. Reveal the preview beneath that edition to find a first letter, then let the solver trace the remaining path.

Keep help optional at a party. Readers can work together or put the page aside, and younger children may want an adult to read the list aloud.

Planning a Halloween paper activity

Which Halloween word search should a new reader try?

Pumpkin patch uses eight familiar words across and down. The large print edition has ten words with bigger letters and the same forward-only directions. Preview the list and help with unfamiliar vocabulary.

Can I print these for a school Halloween party?

You may print free copies for your own classroom or family party. Keep each answer page separate and offer different levels so readers can choose a comfortable challenge.

Does the haunted house puzzle include answers?

Yes. Its second PDF page shades all sixteen word paths in the same grid. Open the answer preview under The haunted house to check a location before downloading.

May I upload the Halloween PDFs to my own website?

Please share the link to this collection instead of republishing the files. The downloads are free for your own home, classroom and tutoring activities, and may not be sold as a pack.
